Summary/Objective

Maintain order among students on a school bus. Duties include helping students safely board and exit and communicating behavioral problems. May perform pretrip and posttrip inspections and prepare for and assist in emergency evacuations.

 

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:

  1. Respond to all internal and external customers, as it relates to position, in a prompt, efficient, friendly and patient manner 
  2. Direct students boarding and exiting the school bus.
  3. Assist disabled children or children with psychological, emotional, or behavioral issues with boarding and exiting the school bus. Operate lifts for wheelchairs.
  4. Buckle seatbelts or fasten wheelchair tie-down straps to secure passengers for transportation.
  5. Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus. 
  6. Accompany students to the classroom or facility, if required. 
  7. Interact with students and parents constructively.
  8. Assist with cleaning school bus interiors by picking up waste, wiping down windows, or vacuuming.
  9. Direct students evacuating the bus during safety drills.
  10. Evacuate students from the school bus in emergency situations.
  11. Maintain knowledge of and adheres to all policies, regulations and rules. 
  12. Perform related duties as assigned in a safe and prudent manner.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Work Environment

This job operates in the buses and within the Transportation Department.  

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  1. Regularly required to communicate, detect, converse with, discern, convey, express oneself, and exchange information with faculty, students, and visitors.
  2. Regularly required to remain stationary.
  3. Regularly required to detect, determine, perceive, identify, recognize, judge, observe, inspect, estimate, and assess details as needed to complete job functions.
  4. Regularly move, transport, position, put, install, and remove items up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 125 pounds, such as a student in a wheelchair.
  5. Occasionally work in temperatures above 100 degrees or below 32 degrees.

Bus monitors work 9 or 11 months, depending upon position. Hours vary depending upon route and may include a split shift.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card with an IVP number through the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
